November 24, 2023Explore the Mystique of Llanthony Secunda Priory with a Guided Tour
About Us
Llanthony Secunda was an influential priory and one of the richest Augustinian houses in the country by 1534. Yet hundreds of years of damage following the Dissolution of the Monasteries, Civil War, Industrialization and neglect had nearly erased the Priory from public memory. The Llanthony Secunda Priory Trust formed and purchased the Priory grounds from Gloucester Council in 2007 and since then, it has been a mission to safeguard the remaining buildings, structures and grounds.
The priory boasts a mix of architectural styles, including medieval, Tudor, and Victorian. Some parts of the building are in ruins, while others have been restored. The surviving buildings include the Medieval Range, Victorian Farmhouse, Brick Range and the Tithe Barn.
The Tithe Barn is another significant structure on the site. It is a large, impressive barn that was used for storing the tithes, or a tenth of the annual produce, which was collected as a tax for the Priory.
The priory is set in a beautiful and serene environment, providing visitors with a peaceful atmosphere. The grounds are often open to the public, and you can explore the remnants of the priory while enjoying the surroundings.
